BigDirtyHikes is built by BigDirt — a backpacker who got tired of two things: gear spreadsheets that drift out of date, and permit systems that quietly hand spots to whoever happens to be watching at the right minute.

So this exists. A pack builder that treats weights like they matter — pulled from manufacturer pages, tracked per variant, never guessed. And permit guides that treat Recreation.gov like a system to be understood rather than a slot machine: how each lottery works, what the odds really are, and where the permits actually come from after the lottery ends.

The rule everything runs on

Accuracy is the entire point. The gear tool never invents a weight — if it isn't on a manufacturer page, it isn't in the catalog. The guides never invent a date or an odds figure — every claim traces to Recreation.gov or the managing agency, and gets re-verified each season when the new dates announce. Spot something wrong?
